Welcome to Day 2 of My Plant-Based Family’s week of gift guides. Next week I’ll back track and help you get ready for Thanksgiving but this week is all about gift giving.
Today I’ll share my recommendation for gift ideas that are over $100, hence the “luxury” title. I only own one of these items so many of them are on our wish list as well. If you are on a tight budget these may be out of reach but worth planning for. Feel free to leave your recommendation and product reviews in the comments. (Additionally, I use affiliate links throughout this post which means if you buy something using this link I make a small percentage at no additional cost to you. This doesn’t influence my opinion of the products and you are not obligated to use my links.)
I LOVE my Keurig K-Cup Home Brewer! My dad got it for us last year for Christmas and it was the best gift ever. There are several different models but this is the one I have. Yes you can make coffee in a cheaper coffee maker but I love my Keurig. I usually only drink 1 cup (or less) of coffee a day. We wish we would have bought a Keurig years ago.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the Vitamix you’ve been in plant-based circles for any length of time. I don’t own a Vitamix but I have friends who do and love theirs. We plan to purchase one in the future but it wont be in our budget for a while. There are many different models and you can even purchase refurbished models. I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about a Vitamix but feel free to share your recommendations in the comments.
I also have quite a few friends that love their Blendtec. There are also several models to choose from and at least one of them will meet your needs.
If you are a baker you probably either have a KitchenAid 5-Quart Mixer or you already have one on your wish list. There are dozens of colors to choose from. My friends love theirs. I was wishing I had one last week when I was baking for the Expo but I don’t think I do enough baking to justify the expense the counter space it would take up.
For years I’ve been hearing about Excalibur 5 Tray Dehydrator but still haven’t taken the plunge. If you are really into eating Raw you’d probably love a dehydrator too. I think it would be fun to make homemade fruit snacks and dehydrate lots of fruit and veggies when they are at the peak of freshness. Check out Excalibur’s website to find dehydrators in fun colors including the red pictured above.
Do you have a luxury item suggestion I should add to the list?
Stay tuned, there are more gift guides coming all week!

I just bought an electric pressure cooker, primarily for cooking dry beans and cooking rice. So far, I am loving it!

I don’t have a pressure cooker. I’ve heard good things about them. I try to keep kitchen stuff to a minimum but it never works. If I ran across a pressure cooker for free or a good price I’d get it. 🙂

I have something luxurious to add. I love my cookware from Mercola.com
It is ceramic, non-toxic and non reactive. I use it everyday. You do have to cook with a little oil or butter because there is not the “non-stick” teflon or other coating that can flake off into your food. http://shop.mercola.com/catalog/cooking,77,0.htm

I didn’t even think of cookware Lauren. The last time I was in the market for some a few years ago I did a ton of research but couldn’t settle on the perfect set. All the research is hard to navigate. I ended up getting a few stainless steel pans from Ikea and they have worked great.

I love my Wusthof knife set. I am certain this will be the last knives I buy unless one goes overboard. (Yes, we cruise for 6 months at a time also) I also have a Chef’s Choice Diamond Hone 110 Professional heavy duty knife sharpener. We need to take care our knives as we use them so much in the kitchen. Definitely a buy together gift!
Holly says
Patti, You are right Knives are a must have! It’s been years since we bought our set so I hadn’t thought of them. Definitely a good investment. Thankfully we found a good set at Tuesday Morning.

Will a food processor be on the under $100 list (though it could also be on the $100+ list)? I bought one for $35 at the same time that we went plant-based, and I’m SO glad we did. I use it constantly!
Holly says
I love my food processor too! Ours was in the $30 to $50 range. For me it is way more important than anything on the luxury list. 🙂

I wish I had known that you wanted a Vitamix! We gave ours away a while back. I discovered that for my purposes, my little cheapo food processor (a Sunbeam Oscar from the thrift store for 2.99!) and an immersion blender were more effective, and took up less room. I think there ARE jobs that the Vitamix is perfect for (perhaps grinding your own flour?) but they aren’t things that I usually do. On the other hand – I second the Knife suggestion (altho I think one can be gotten for under $100.) A friend gave me a nice Henckels Chef’s Knife several years ago – and I think of her every time I use it – which is several times a day : ) It is exceptionally well-made, and very pleasant to use!
Holly says
I would have gladly taken your vitamix off your hands. 🙂 Within hours of this post my blender stopped working and my magic bullet is now only barely working. We will be buying something new soon, but it will be something under $100.

So sorry to hear of your blender loss! When you have a beloved kitchen tool, it’s always sad to see it go!
Holly says
We bought it less than a year ago and I saved the receipt and box. We will figure out the best way to return it soon. I’d still like a better blender, but I’ll take a free blender (exchanged) until we buy a better one.

The vitamix is totally worth it! I have a 9 tray dehydrator on my list for Christmas! And my husband has a kitchen aide mixer because he loves to bake!! So that would be fun!! I have so many kitchen appliances but it’s something I enjoy spending $ on over clothing and stuff!!

One day….One day! I love spending money on kitchen stuff. It’s definitely a happy place. I try to browse though the kitchen sections of stores when I have time.
